The Assault Rifle (アサルトライフル)[1] , also recognized as being a Bayonet rifle (銃剣)[2][3], is a recurring weapon featured in the Strider series.

Concept art from Strider 2

An assault rifle is defined as a type of firearm with an intermediate cartridge power, more powerful than a pistol or handgun but not at the level of full-powered rifles or battle rifles. Assault rifles also feature a detachable box magazine usually positioned in front of the trigger and the ability to be adjusted to fire in semi-automatic or full automatic mode. A recurring element seen in most appearances of an Assault Rifle in the series is the inclusion of an equipped bayonet knife used for close-quarter combat.

The assault rifle is the standard service rifle used by most military forces, and can be seen employed by a number of organizations.

Appearances[]

Strider Hiryu (Manga)[]

Manga rifle

Members of the Rebel Army are seen wielding assault rifles as their weapon of choice[4]. The rifle is of standard design with no notable additions, and appears to lack a bayonet. Visually, the rifle appears to be the Russian AK-47 model, except for its use of a straight magazine box instead of the more common curved version.

The Kazakh Secret Police personnel is seen wielding similar rifles, except with a sight scope equipped on top.[5]

The Striders are also seen employing assault rifles among other weapons. Strider Arana in particular is seen carrying one during his mission to eliminate Hiryu and Kain, but gets no chance to use it before he's defeated.

Strider (CPS-1)[]

Infantry green

Infantryman wielding his Assault Rifle

The service rifle for the Kazakh Federation's forces is a rifle equipped with a bayonet[3]. The weapon is a compact silver-colored model of assault rifle with a short barrel, a carrying handle on top and what appears to be a second vertical grip near the barrel, which can be seen held tightly by its user to assist in maneuverability. The bayonet knife is of average-length and installed right under the muzzle.

Russian Infantryman use it as their primary weapon, shooting at Hiryu from afar in semi-automatic mode (one bullet at a time). If they get close to Hiryu (or enter in panic and Hiryu turns his back to them), they instead thrust their rifle and upper body forward in an attempt to stab him with the bayonet knife[2][3]. A smaller rifle model is also carried by the human-shaped defense machine Rascal, although these little robots only use their weapon to stab at Hiryu and are never seen firing it.

This model of Assault Rifle resembles the FAMAS rifle in some of its elements.

Strider 2[]

Fortress guard green

Fortress Guard wielding his Assault Rifle

The Assault Rifle is the weapon of choice used by Fortress Wahnen's private military soldiers. This model is black-colored and wider in shape when compared to the original rifle, but retains the carrying handle and bayonet blade in its design. It features a short, straight magazine box right in front ot the trigger, although concept art initially showed it on the rear side of the gun in a bullpup configuration[1]. It has a bayonet spike of average-length equipped under the barrel. This model lacks a vertical grip, the user instead holding it from the handguard, close to the base of the bayonet equipment.

Fortress Guards use their Assault Rifle differently depending on the color of their uniform: Guards with green uniforms only employ the bayonet in their weapon to strike at Hiryu when close, while guards in blue uniforms move away from Hiryu and shoot at him from afar. These guards are seen sliding the forend of their weapons before firing, an indication of a pump action mechanism. While pump action rifles do exist, assault rifles in this configuration are literally unheard of.

The bayonet equipment can be switched out with a grenade launcher add-on, a configuration used by soldiers in dark blue uniforms stationed in the fortress' inner quarters. These enemies shoot grenades at an arc to strike Hiryu from above.

As before, the Rascal defense machine employed in the defense of the Antarctica Research Lab uses a scaled-down Assault Rifle as its weapon. Once again they are never seen firing it, instead hopping forward in an attempt to stab Hiryu with the bayonet.

Strider (2014)[]

Main article: Custom Rifle

The service rifle used by Meio's Army is a modern design version known as the Custom Rifle. The weapon features an unique, futuristic design and a blue-glowing bayonet in front, and employ glowing (possibly plasma-enhanced) bullets. It is used by both the Light and Military Troopers within the army, and unlike previous enemies they are seen using it in both semi-automatic and burst mode.

Its design and functionality has also been adapted into several other types of weapons for use by specialized troopers including shotgun, sniper and machine gun models.

Trivia[]

  • The soldier seen on the cover art for the NES Strider was given a futuristic-looking AK-47 with a spike bayonet as his weapon[6], but in the actual game the Russian Infantryman enemy uses what appears to be a bladed weapon or knife (possibly a bayonet on its own) exclusively to attack.
  • The unused Infantry type of Commando Troop from Strider 2 was planned to wield an Assault Rifle with a strap-on.[1]
